,ELIZABETHTOWN — Throughout the last 12 months Bladen County Schools’ elementary and middle school science teachers have partnered with Fayetteville State University
School of Education
in an inquiry-based science outreach program,
IBSO for Teachers.
Lillian Johnson, Kimberly Smith-Burton and Abdelmajid Kassem from FSU were the project directors.
According to FSU, IBSO is based on the reality that American students are not proficient in science when examined at the national, state, and local levels. There is a call by researchers, especially at the national level to change the way science is taught with the hopes that students will greatly benefit from new and modified teaching techniques.
Teachers participated in 90 hours of intensive training using content information, inquiry-based, hands-on activities.
Program facilitators offered science outside of the classroom at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, NC Museum of Natural Science Prairie Ridge Eco-station, Fascinate-U Children’s Museum,Southeastern Community College, Clarkton School of Discovery, Pauline Jones Elementary, and the North Carolina State University Science House.
Teachers gained self-efficacy in teaching inquiry-based learning and hands-on science to students through the study of animals, the hydrosphere, weather and climate, and aquatic animal and plant life at Lake Rim Park, John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center, Jones Lake.
Participants from Bladen County Schools were Vanessa Ruffin, Angela Campbell, Christy Stevens, Stephanie Norris, Chris Callihan, Michelle Beatty, Penny Guyton, Sarah Straw, Sarah Thrailkill, Paula Beck, Wendy Marshburn, Margie Godfrey, and David Wimert.
