Lady Eagles open playoffs at home, Eagles and Lady Knights on the road

Three of the four Bladen County varsity basketball teams will see action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs that open on Monday. Only West Bladen’s Knights, a perennial playoff team over the past decade, were not invited to the party.

The first round of the state playoffs, which open Monday, includes six boys teams from the Waccamaw Conference, including the East Bladen Eagles, and five girls teams from the Waccamaw Conference, including the Lady Eagles of East Bladen and the Lady Knights of West Bladen.

Class 2-A Mideast boys

The 15-10 Eagles open the state playoffs on the road at Graham High — located between Durham and Greensboro, and a 2-hour, 30-minute drive.

The Red Devils, who play out of the Mid-State Conference, are 22-5 this season and seeded No. 2 in the Mideast bracket. East Bladen is seeded No. 15.

Other Waccamaw teams invited to the dance are:

— Whiteville High, the conference tournament champions, is 19-7 and seeded No. 6. The Wolfpack will host No. 11 Eastern Randolph High, 16-10.

— North Brunswick High, the conference regular-season champion, is 16-8 and seeded No. 4. The Scorpions will host No. 13 South Lenoir, 14-10.

— South Columbus High is 15-7 and seeded No. 10. The Stallions will travel to face No. 7 Clinton High, 19-7.

Class 3-A East boys

From the Waccamaw Conference …

— West Brunswick High is 12-11 and seeded No. 4. The Trojans will host No. 13 D.H. Conley, 15-11.

— South Brunswick High is 3-20 and seeded No. 9. The Cougars will travel to face No. 8 Currituck, 9-16.

Class 2-A Mideast girls

The 21-6 Lady Eagles of East Bladen, who finished second in the Waccamaw Conference Tournament and regular season, open the state playoffs seeded No. 7 and host No. 10 South Lenoir High out of Deep Run.

The Lady Blue Devils are 17-6 and play out of the East Central Conference.

The 19-6 Lady Knights of West Bladen, who tied for second in the Waccamaw Conference regular-season standings, open the playoffs seeded No. 9 and will travel to No. 8 Fairmont High.

The Lady Golden Tornadoes are 12-13 and play out of the Three Rivers Conference.

Other Waccamaw teams in the playoffs …

— Whiteville High, which went undefeated (12-0) in the Waccamaw Conferenec en route to the regular-season and tournament titles, is 19-6 and seeded No. 3. The Lady Wolfpack opens by hosting No. 14 Croatan High, 6-17.

Class 3-a East girls

From the Waccamaw Conference …

— West Brunswick High is 3-18 and seeded No. 9. The Lady Trojans will travel to face No. 8 Croatan High, 6-17.

— South Brunswick High is 4-19 and seeded No. 5. The Lady Cougars will host No. 12 C.B. Aycock out of Pikeville, 12-13.

All second round games for the state playoffs will be played on Wednesday.
