WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The Reel Hookers, a team of anglers made up of six area women, defended their 2011 title at the 39th annual Cape Fear Blue Marlin Tournament by winning the overall prize for the second straight year.

Team members Dawn Maynard and Debbie Campbell of the Elizabethtown-White Lake area put their rods and reels together with Lori Huff of Clinton, Gina Strickland of Clinton, Deanna Parks of Wallace and Wendy Crumpler of Wallace to capture the 2012 title after three days of fishing, June 28-30.

Maynard, Campbell and Huff were part of the winning crew that took top honors in 2011.

The all-female fishing team was competing on the boat Chain Link out of Morehead City, captained by Ralph Griffin with Anothony Petrelli serving as mate.

According to the tournament’s website, the Reel Hookers earned 375 points for the three white marlins caught — the first by Maynard on the tournament’s opening day, and two by Strickland on the second day of competition. That put them 125 points ahead of their nearest competitors and resulted in a first-place prize of $8,100 for the team.

In addition, Strickland took first place in the Meat Fish category with a 19.7-pound wahoo and earned $1,012.50; Maynard reeled in second place in the Meat Fish category with an 18.9-pound wahoo and pocketed $675.

The Cape Fear Blue Marlin Tournament, a catch and release competition, is part of the North Carolina Governor’s Cup.
