Coming off a ten-day break due to exams and weather against a St. Pauls team that they had defeated by 33 points, the Lady Eagles led by only 13-8 midway the second quarter when Nyiesha Murchison picked off a pass and sprinted for the layup that began the East spurt.
Kemp dropped in a floater from the lane and Jelisa Horne netted a layup off a Murchison assist. Murchison flipped in a runner off a Jasmine Kemp assist and Raven Locklear hit four of six free throws in the final two minutes of the half to push the lead to 25-10.
Locklear‘s fast break layup and a Horne foul shot began the second half. Kemp banked in a runner, center Courtney Melvin worked the paint for a 3-point play then turned a Kemp pass into a layup that upped the count to 35-12.
Locklear canned a 14-footer to make it 37-18 at the quarter break.
Melvin rang up nine of her game-high 19 points in the final period. The sophomore center dropped in five free throws and a pair of layups. Kemp passes produced layups for Horne and Perkins, and Horne drove for another layup as the East lead grew to 52-22 with 3:33 left to play.
Kemp totaled 10 points, Horne finished with nine, and Locklear followed with eight as coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles remained undefeated in the league at 6-0 and improved to 11-2 overall. East Bladen is currently fifth in the N.C. Preps 1-A state rankings.
Kemp raced for a layup off the opening tap. Melvin tossed in two free throws and powered in a layup. Horne connected from 15 feet,
Melvin added a free throw, and Kemp turned a steal into a layup for an 11-6 East lead at the quarter break.
