The Rev. Hilton O. Smith, a native of Elizabethtown, was recently honored during the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Rev. Smith, senior vice president with Turner Construction Company, the largest general building contractor in the United States, was one of the key executives in the construction of historical memorial. It was constructed on the mall amongst the memorial for presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The King memorial was dedicated in the presence of President and Mrs. Obama along with more than 100,000 people in attendance.

Rev. Smith was honored for 40 years of service at Turner Construction Company as one of the highest ranking officers. His awards are numerous featuring several keys to cities and hall of fame inductions

He is a graduate of Bladen Central High, Augustine’s College, Cornell University and Boston College.

He received an honorary doctorate from David Meyers University’s Executive Management Program. He also attended the Urban Theology Program at Yale University.

Rev. Smith was ordained at Union Baptist Church in Stamford, Conn. He presently serves as associate pastor of the Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

He and his wife Deloris have three children and four grandchildren. They reside in Bratenahl, Ohio.

Rev. Smith is the son of the deceased Deacon Jack Smith and Mrs. Willie Maude Smith, and stepson of Delores C. Smith.
