COROLLA – On Saturday, Sept. 27, National Hunting and Fishing Day will be celebrated at Mackay Island Wildlife Refuge with an event aimed mostly for the next generation of hunters and anglers.

A Ducks Unlimited Greenwings event will be held, with help from the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, Currituck Ducks Unlimited, the North Carolina Bowhunters Association and the staff of Mackay Island Wildlife Refuge.

All participants will receive a rod and reel, tackle box, bait, T-shirt, goody bag and a Greenwings membership. The cost is $25 per child. There will be lots of fishing and opportunities to learn to shoot a bow. Everyone, including parents and siblings, will receive lunch. Plan to spend the day fishing and learning about the wildlife refuge and the important conservation work there.

Greenwings are younger Ducks Unlimited members who participate in the conservation, restoration and management of wetlands and associated habitats for waterfowl and other wildlife.

National Hunting and Fishing Day, formalized by Congress in 1971, was created to celebrate the conservation achievements of hunters and anglers that benefit all who appreciate wildlife and the outdoors. For more information, go to www.nhfday.org
