FRED FLOWERS ATKINSON

Fred Flowers Atkinson, 80, of Clarkton, passed on Aug. 1, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington. The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at 2 p.m., at Savannah Temple AME Zion Church, Clarkton. Pastor Valentine Sutton will deliver the eulogy, the burial followed in the church cemetery. The viewing was held on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2007, from noon until 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service.

He is survived by his wife, Everlean Atkinson of Clarkton; and nine children, Deloris, Alfred, Evelyn, Earl, Joyce, Marzell, Brenda, Patricia, and Fredericka.

WILLIAM SHEPARD “BILL” AVERITT

Funeral Services for William Shepard “Bill” Averitt, 87, Lawrence, Kan., were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Lawrence, Kan. Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, Kan. He died July 30, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Abbottsburg, the son of Franklin Shepard and Sallie Bell Monroe (Davis) Averitt. He graduated from Tar Heel High School in 1940.

Mr. Averitt worked as a meat grader for the United States Department of Agriculture. He worked there for 30 years and retired in 1981. He had formerly lived in Norfolk, Va., Philadelphia, Penn., Trenton, N.J., Oklahoma City, Okla., and Hutchinson, Kan., before moving to Lawrence in 2004.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the US Army Engineers, 817th Engineers Aviation Battalion. He was a member of Dorsey-Liberty Post #14, American Legion in Lawrence, and the Atlantic Masonic Lodge #2 in Norfolk, Va.

Mr. Averitt married Corinne Mildred “Millie” Dew on July 27, 1953. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mildred Dawn Averitt Trent (husband, Danny C. Trent), Lawrence, Kan.; a son, James Shepard Averitt (wife, Karen A. Kuhlmann Averitt), Lee's Summit, Mo.; a brother; Eugene F. Averitte, Tar Heel; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Alex, Aric, & Joshua.

The family suggests memorials in his name to First Baptist Church in Lawrence, or First Baptist Church in Hutchinson, Kan., or to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Department and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence or the Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson, Kan..

The family received friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church in Lawrence and at the church parlor at the First Baptist Church in Hutchinson directly following the graveside services until 12 Friday.

EVANGELINE HARRIS

Evangeline Harris, 64, of 71 North 13th St., Bolton, died Wednesday Aug. 1, at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. The funeral was held Monday, Aug. 6, at Walter’s Chapel AME Zion Church. The burial was in the Restwell Cemetery #1. The viewing was held at Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville on Sunday from noon until 1 p.m. and again following the service.

She is survived by a daughter, Erica Harris of Bolton; a son, Dale Harris of Collieville, Tenn.; a sister, Pearline Corbin of Philadelphia, Penn.; and a brother, Raylon Harris of Bolton.

Thelma A. Lennon, 78, of Bladenboro, died Aug. 5, 2007.

Janie Mae Moore, 60, of 36 Lancelot Lane, Whiteville, died Friday, Aug. 3, at Duke University Medical Center. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Diamond Branch Baptist Church. The burial will be in the Campground Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, William H. Moore; five daughters, Bernita Green of Brunswick, Sylvia Bingham, Robbin Harris, and Cassandra Cunningham of Georgia, and Shayla Moore of Whiteville; five sons, Robert Cunningham and Pierre Moore of Winston-Salem, Aaron Cunningham of Whiteville, George Moore of Elizabethtown, and DeAndre Moore of Fayetteville; a brother, Arthur J. Rouse of Whiteville.

WILLIAM D. PIERCE

William D. Pierce, 95, of 99 Spears Lane, Hallsboro, died Thursday, Aug. 2 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church. The burial will be in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. The viewing will at Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville, Tuesday from noon until 8 p.m. Viewing will also be at the church before the service on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m., there will be no viewing after the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday from 10:30-11 a.m.

He is survived by two daughters, Janice I. Floyd of Hallsboro and Clarkie P. Fuller of Randallstown, Md.; two sons, Dennis N. Pierce of Bethel, Conn., and Aaron Pierce of Fayetteville.

RODNEY LINELL SIMS

Rodney Linell Sims, 19, of 910 Sam Potts Highway, Lake Waccamaw, died Sunday, Aug. 5, at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

JOSEPH “CLAYTON” STUBBS

Joseph “Clayton” Stubbs, 76, of Bladenboro entered into eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 at Sunbridge Nursing Center.

Mr. Stubbs was born in Bladen County to Joseph William and Josephine Singletary Stubbs.

He served in the United sates Marine Corps for two years. While serving, he as awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Stubbs worked as a supervisor at the Bladenboro Cotton Mill until he retired in 1996. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Stubbs; two brothers, Garland Stubbs and Stanley Stubbs; and two sisters, Ora Edwards and Myra Stubbs.

Mr. Stubbs is survived by his wife, Laura Wright Stubbs of the home; three nieces, Patsy Stubs Parker, and husband, Jimmy, Sandra Louise Stubbs all of Wilmington, and Nancy Hollingsworth and husband, Bruce, of Hampstead; two nephews, Tommy Edwards, and his wife, Renee, of Davidson and Kenneth Stubbs of Bladenboro; sister-in-law, Wilma Stubbs of Bladenboro, a step-grandaughter, Angela Wells, and a step-great-grandson, Ethan Evans.

Visitation was Saturday Aug. 4, 2007 form 6 until 8 p.m. at West Bladenboro Baptist Church. The funeral was Sunday Aug. 5, 2007 at 3 p.m. at West Bladenboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Smith and the Rev. Boyd Britt officiating. The burial followed the service in the Lewis Cemetery, Bladenboro.

AUSTIN PERRY WELLS

Austin Perry Wells, 68, of Kannapolis, formerly of Clarkton, died Aug. 2, 2007 at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. A private service will be held at a later date.

He is survived by four children; Ronald Watts of Kannapolis, Angela Watts McLean of Bladenboro, Jonathan Watts of Pennsylvania, and David Watts of Kannapolis; three brothers, Wayne Watts of Clarkton, Kenny Watts of Clarkton, and Mike Watts of New Bern; and a sister, Evelyn Weatherington of New Bern.
