Fayetteville man dies in Tar Heel crash

A Fayetteville man became Bladen County’s third traffic fatality after a single-car crash March 8.

Bladen County Coroner Hubert Kinlaw said Hiram Wesley Council Jr. of Fayetteville was traveling west on Tar Heel Ferry Road when he apparently lost control of his car. The N.C. Highway Patrol determined Council’sBMW crossed the center line at a high rate of speed, and when Council overcorrected, the car left the road and overturned,Kinlaw said.

Councilwas dead on the scene. There were no other passengers or injuries.

Councilwas driving between 60 and 65 miles per hourwhenthe crashoccured, Kinlaw said. It was reported Council failed to stop at an intersections a short distance away from the crash scene, Kinlaw said.

The crash occured shortly before 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. Council was 53 and lived on Stonington Drive in Fayetteville. It was the third fatal crash on Bladen County highways this year. The last fatality was on Feb. 3, and also occured on Tar Heel Ferry Road.

A total of nine people died on Bladen County roads last year.
