Baptiste gets commission at Mercer

Derrick Baptiste was commissioned a U. S. Army second lieutenant on May 14 at Mercer University. He also received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a maor in computer engineering from Mercer's School of Engineering. He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.

Baptiste served as the battalion S3 operations officer in the Mercer ROTC. He has been a member of the ROTC Color Guard for four years. He has received the Distinguished Military Graduate Award and he attended U. S. Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

Baptiste is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He participated in the Mercer Binary Bears Programming Team his junior and senior years.

Baptiste made both the president's and dean's list on numerous occasions.

He was commissioned active duty into the Signal Corps and will attend Officer Basic Course at Ft. Gordon, Ga.

He is the son of Leonard and Eleanor Baptiste.
