Special Agent Jerry Weaver of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation said Gene Lambert, who lives on N.C. 87 West near Tar Heel, was charged Tuesday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and kidnapping. He was placed in the Robeson County Jail under $1 million bond. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Weaver said Lambert allegedly shot Alex M. Thomas, 20, of Rennert Road, Lumberton, after a confrontation at a residence on Shaw Mill Road, near Lumberton. The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Thomas was shot multiple times with a .45 caliber pistol. Weaver said he did not know if the weapon was Lambert's issue sidearm.
Thomas was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Weaver said there was no change in his condition Monday.
Lambert is a former St. Pauls Police Officer. While there, he was cleared of any wrongdoing after shooting and killing a bank robber.
Because a police officer was involved, the SBI is handling the investigation.
