The Elizabethtown Town Council will meet in special session Tuesday to discuss a new town manager, and possibly amending the town's fiscal year budget-before it comes into usage.

The board decision to discuss the matters came Monday at a specially called meeting of the town council. The meeting was called and advertised as a discussion of the town manager's position and starting the search for an interim town manager.

Town Manager David Smitherman announced at the June 7 regular meeting that he will leave in July to take a job as County Manager for Lee County.

Commissioner Scott Ussery, who cast the sole vote against adopting the fiscal year 04-05 budget for the town, asked if the council could discuss making changes to the budget.

Commissioners were advised by Town Attorney Goldston Womble that since an emergency situation did not exist, they should set another meeting and advertise their intent to discuss the budget as well.

Municipal budgets are commonly amended throughout the fiscal year, but rarely between being adopted and put into effect.

Smitherman said Thursday the board will meet with representatives from the League of Municipalities Tuesday to discuss qualifications for town manager applicants and possible interim town manager candidates.

The League maintains a list of retired town and county officials who act as interim managers for communities, generally on a contract basis.

The search for interim candidates is being limited to former managers, Smitherman said.

Tuesday's special meeting starts at noon in the town council chambers.
