Sponsored locally by Bladen County Waste Management, the event will be a highlight of the Spring 2004 "Litter Sweep" roadside cleanup campaign sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Project coordinator Gloria Dove, of Keep Bladen Beautiful, says that she hopes to attract a large number of volunteers to this year's effort. Bladen's effort is in conjunction with the national event.
The Great American Cleanup includes millions across the nation who volunteer to take part in this organized community cleanup campaign. It is part of the "Keep America Beautiful" program, which includes a variety of activities through the year.
According to Dove, the program designates a specific date for residents to go out into the highways and byways and clean up the environment.
"The Great American Cleanup is a fun, educational, outdoor, springtime activity that provides a way for everyone to become involved in removing litter from our environment," said Dove. "This year we have an added incentive in our cleanup here in Bladen.
"We will award four tickets to the November 4 Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington (South Carolina) on November 14," Dove said. "The tickets will be awarded after the cleanup in a drawing to be held after the cleanup is completed. There will be other prizes as well."
Volunteers who register for the Great American Cleanup will be provided with trash bags, vests and gloves, Dove said.
