A full complement of Bladen Community College faculty, administrators, and trustees attended the Basic Skills Commencement on Friday, September 13, in the school's Multi-Purpose Building.

Dr. Darrell Page, BCC president, welcomed the audience of approximately 300 family members and guests who attended to pay respects to the graduates of the Adult High School and GED programs.

Levi E. Dixon, 92-year-old resident of East Arcadia and a GED graduate, recited from memory a poem to the graduating class.

Superior Court Judge Ola M. Lewis delivered the commencement address.

Five students were honored with scholarships to attend Bladen Community College: Abraham Ruelas, Debbie McKoy, Mary Kelly, Shirley Phillips, and Cara Stull.

Dr. Melba McCallum, vice-president of Continuing Education, presented the candidates for graduation.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Essic Williams, Jr., recognized the candidates as graduates and made the charge that launched them on the path to productive jobs and higher education.

Vocal music for the event was provided by Charles Dixon, and Linda Dowless, executive assistant to the president, was pianist for the ceremony.

A total of 24 students earned AHS certification and 46 graduated from the GED program.
