With the probability of Hurricane Matthew encroaching Bladen County late Friday and into Saturday, all Bladen County Schools will be closed on Friday, October 7 for students and staff. Bladen County Emergency Management operations have activated their storm preparation plans and will be coordinating the opening of shelters on Friday. By dismissing school on Friday, EMS can begin preparing shelters Thursday afternoon.
Four shelters have been identified in Bladen County. They are Bladen Lakes Primary School, East Bladen High School, the East Arcadia annex of Bladen Community College in Riegelwood , and West Bladen High School.
For residents with pets, West Bladen High School will be the pet friendly shelter. If bringing a pet to the West Bladen shelter, be sure they are properly tagged with identification and contact information. We encourage residents that live in low lying areas and unstable structures to utilize the availability of the shelters as early as possible on Friday.
Bladen County Schools will continue to monitor the weather throughout the week and its impact to our county making any necessary adjustments as needed to school schedules. Stay tuned to your local weather and news station for updates. Any school updates or changes will be posted on the Bladen County Schools district website, and the Bladen County Schools Facebook and Twitter pages.
