ELIZABETHTOWN — The push for 1,000 pairs of socks got a bit closer last week, but folks who want to contribute to the “Sock It To ‘Em” project at the Bladen Journal only have a week to do so.

“Sock It To ‘Em,” the brainchild of Anna Grace Allen, 14 — the current Miss Bladenboro Outstanding Teen who will compete in the N.C. Outstanding Teen Pagent in June — will benefit the homeless and needy in the region and will also serve as Allen’s platform for the Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen Pageant in June.

The Bladen Journal is partnering with Allen to assit with the local effort of collecting pairs of socks. As of Friday at noon, a total of 907 pairs of socks had been collected.

The “Sock It To ‘Em” effort at the Bladen Journal will last through Friday.

“There’s not much time left,” said W. Curt Vincent. general manager/editor of the Bladen Journal. “We’ve seen a tremendous amount of generosity during the month-long effort, but we’re hoping this last week will really put a good exclamation point on the project.”

Allen, who volunteers at area homeless shelters and soup kitchens, was told that socks were the most-needed items for the homeless. At the end of the month, all of the socks will be given to Allen, who will deliver them to the Salvation Army so they can be distributed to the area’s homeless and needy.

Vincent said the project fits right in with what the Bladen Journal already does each fall.

“We already do a blanket and sleeping bag collection for the homeless and needy in the fall, and we thought helping Allen with collecting socks in the spring would fit perfectly,” he said.

Vincent said the contributions have come from a wide swath of the community — including individuals, church groups and even an anonymous company that donated 500 pairs of socks recently.
