ELIZABETHTOWN — Bladen County Schools can now boast of having a state finalist in the competition for Teacher Assistant of the Year.

Kristy Smith, an instructional assistant for kindergarten students at Elizabethtown primary School, added to her county Teacher Assistant of the Year honor and was recently named the District 4 Teacher Assistant of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants.

Smith will now advance to the statewide competition as one of eight finalists. The 2016 Teacher Assistant of the Year competition opens with an interview segment on Feb. 20.

Smith is the wife of White Lake Police Chief Bruce Smith. The White Lake residents have two children.
