Lady Eagles win conference tennis opener

BURGAW — East Bladen got solid play up and down its lineup Thursday and earned a Four County Conference road win on the tennis court against Pender County, 8-1.

The win gave the Lady Eagles a 2-0 overall mark and 1-0 in the conference.

In singles, Justyna Gargala won 8-3 at No. 1; Cassie Hill got an 8-2 win at No. 2; Trinity Carroll took an 8-1 win at No. 3; Ting Lin got an 8-0 whitewash win at No. 5; and Jayme Frady earned an easy 8-0 win at No. 6.

In doubles, Hill and Lin teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1; Carroll and Maddie West took an 8-4 win at No. 2; and Frady and Bailee Davis earned an 8-0 shutout win at No. 3.

The Lady Knights remained perfect on the season Thursday with an 8-1 Four County Conference win over visiting Wallace-Rose Hill.

In singles, Alanna Ludlum coasted to an 8-1 win at No. 1 to stay undefeated in regular-season play since her sophomore season; Amber Long took an 8-2 win at No. 2 to stay undefeated this season; Conner Brisson got an 8-0 shutout win at No. 4; Savannah Lee took an 8-2 win at No. 5; and Hannah Arnett earned a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 6

In doubles action, Ludlum and Long paired for an 8-2 win at No. 1 to stay unbeaten this season; Conner Brisson and Lee took an 8-0 whitewash win at No. 2; and the duo of Alyssa Bell and Autumn Brisson got a 6-1 win when their opponents retired.

West Bladen improved to 8-0 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

Volleyball

— In Rocky Point on Thursday, West Bladen earned a Four County Conference win over Heidi Trask by the scores of 25-19, 25-12, 18-25 and 25-16.

Kathryn Schultz had 10 kills and two aces for the Lady Knights; Raegan Davis had eight kills, four solo blocks and two aces; Morgan Schumacher had five kills; Jenna Dove had three kills and two aces; Logan Autry had nine assists and four aces; Kassidy Anderson had nine service winners and four kills; Laikyn Pait had four kills; and Kaylee Stevens had three kills.

West Bladen improved to 6-3 overall, 2-1 in the conference.

— In Elizabethtown on Thursday, the Lady Eagles were swept by visiting Pender County in straight sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-11.

Ashley Hardin had eight service winners for East Bladen, while Hannah Devane had seven service points and two kills.

East Bladen fell to 3-6 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

Soccer

The Eagles got a measure of revenge for an earlier loss when they traveled to Tabor City and knotted up South Columbus in a non-conference match, 1-1.

After a scoreless first half, Brooks McGill found Greyson Hesutess with a pass and Hesutess buried the shot for a 1-0 edge. But the Stallions took advantage of a penalty kick late in the match to tie things up.

East Bladen is now 4-1-1 on the season.
