ELIZABETHTOWN —East Bladen High’s Eagles hit the practice gridiron this week with about 70 student-athletes spread among the varsity and jayvee football teams.
Under the watchful eye of varsity head coach Robby Priest and his staff, the two squads got right to work on offensive and defensive drills.
“We’re not quite as big as we were last year, but we’re probably faster,” Priest said. “And all the athleticism is there.”
The Eagles are on the practice field from 6 to 8 p.m. each day, working toward a pair of scrimmage sessions next week — the first on Wednesday, Aug. 10, when they travel to Lumberton for the second annual Battle of the Carolinas, and the second on Friday, Aug, 12, when East Bladen host its own Jamboree.
The season opens one week later, on Friday, Aug. 19.
