DUBLIN — West Bladen’s Dixie Youth Pre-Majors summer baseball team lost out on a chance to advance to it fourth straight World Series after dropping three games at the North Carolina State Tournament in Leland recently, but the Knights still earned a special honor.
Coach Kim Cain said state tournament officials called him after the tournament had concluded and told him the West Bladen team had been chosen as the Sportsmanship Award winner.
“We didn’t know about it until after we’d already been eliminated,” Cain said. “They called to tell us and will have the trophy delivered.”
The Knights, who had won three straight state tournaments, lost to Columbus County twice and Brunswick County once. Duplin County went on to win the state title with a victory over Columbus County, and will now represent North Carolina in the World Series at Guntersville, Ala., between July 30 and Aug. 3.
Members of the West Bladen team were: Jonathan Ashworth, Scott Bowen, Jalen Drew, Dalton Pait, Hunter Pait, Weston Pidgeon, Jonathan Robinson, Caleb Sholar, Trey Storms, Ian Sykes, Logan West, Trent West, Jarrett Williams.
