LUMBERTON — On the heels of an opening-season loss to Lumberton on Monday, West Bladen got a huge shot in the arm from the arm of southpaw Ian Sykes, who came on in the second game of the twin bill and hurled a no-hitter at the Pirates.
The two teams played under an angry, dark sky that threatened rain but never delivered.
In the nightcap, a walk to Caleb Sholar turned into the Knight’s first run when he went to second on a groundout and bolted home when a pickoff throw from the pitcher went into center.
Lumberton all but handed the Knights another run with an error and, moments later, Trent West laced an RBI single for a 3-0 lead and Sykes kept the Pirates at bay for the split.
In the opener, Lumberton scored six unearned runs in the third frame and went on to a 7-3 win.
