Knights whip Swett in tennis; Lady Eagles nip Red Springs in soccer

PEMBROKE — West Bladen’s tennis Knights completed a two-match sweep of Class 4-A Purnell Swett on Monday with a 7-2 non-conference win.

In singles action, Victor Jacome took an easy 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1; Matthew Bobby earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3; Felix Rebollar got a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4; Christian Diego rallied for a 6-2, 4-6 and 10-6 win at No. 5; and Jose Osorio won at No. 6, 6-2 and 6-1.

In doubles, the Knights’ No. 1 duo of Jacome and Bobby took an 8-2 win; and the tandem of Diego and Osorio earned an easy 8-1 win.

West Bladen is now 2-2 this season.




— A corner kick late in the match helped give East Bladen a 1-0 win over Red Springs in a non-conference match Monday, 1-0.

With just under 10 minutes letf to play, Hannah DeVane took the Lady Eagles’ corner kick and arced it toward the front post, where Anna Grace Long was waiting. Despite the Lady Red Devils’ goalie tipping the ball, Long managed to tap it into the net for what proved to be the winner.

The Lady Eagles outshot Red Springs by a 20-8 margin and also had a huge lead in corner kicks, 18-2.

East Bladen goalie Kathryn Cole recorded five saves.

The Lady Eagles are now 4-0.
