DUNN — After suffering two lopsided losses to Midway during the regular season, the No. 5-seeded Lady Knights went to Dunn on Tuesday and got revenge with a 43-39 win over the No. 4-seed Lady Raiders, knocking them out of the Four County Conference Tournament in the first round.
West Bladen improved to 8-16 overall — and the prize for pulling off the upset is a Wednesday game against No. 1 seed and undefeated East Bladen at Union High at 6 p.m.
Midway opened the game with a 13-6 run through the first quarter, but Alanna Ludlum gave the Lady Knights hope with a three-pointer and a free throws in the opening period.
The two teams traded points through the second half. Laikyn Pait had six points for West Bladen and each team put 10 points on the board. The Lady Raiders went into halftime with a 23-16 edge.
But the tables turned in the second half.
West Bladen went on an 11-6 spurt through the third quarter, led by seven points from Akira Grimes and a pair of baskets by Logan Autry to cut the deficit to 29-27 entering the fourth frame.
The momentum stayed with the Lady Knights, and a 4-0 burst to open the period gave West Bladen the lead at 31-29. Midway closed the gap to 36-35 with less than 2 minutes to play before managing to knot the game at 39-39 with 30 seconds left.
A basket by Grimes gave the Lady Knights a 41-39 lead and a pair of free throws by Pait sealed the win.
Grimes and Pait each scored 11 points to lead West Bladen — Pait also had eight rebounds and Grimes had five. Erica McKoy had five assists and Autry also pulled down eight rebounds.
