FAIRMONT — The West Bladen girls basketball team got off to a sluggish start in its game against Fairmont on Tuesday — and never recovered.
The Lady Knights were defeated 47-28, with the Golden Tornadoes notching their first win of the season.
Fairmont used a 12-3 first quarter and 18-8 third quarter to pull away from the visitors.
Marsha Clewis and Destiny McMillan each collected a double-double to lead the Golden Tornadoes. Clewis finished with 10 points and 11 boards and sparked a 10-0 Fairmont run in the third quarter to give the Golden Tornadoes some breathing room. McMillian added 10 points and 10 rebounds, with Krishay Moore also tallying 10 points for the hosts.
West Bladen’s Laikyn Pait scored seven of her team-high eight points in the second quarter, trimming the lead to 18-11 at the half. Pait also finished with nine rebounds.
Moore scored six of the first eight points to give Fairmont an early 8-0 lead. The Lady Knights were held without a basket until the three-minute mark in the opening period.
In junior varsity action, the West Bladen girls won 27-26 and the Fairmont boys claimed a 45-15 victory.
