West Bladen sweeps Vikings

CERRO GORDO — The Lady Knights used a 14-2 run late in the game to earn their first win of the young season, a low-scoring 29-17 non-conference victory over host West Columbus on Friday.

The win evened West Bladen’s record at 1-1.

The Lady Vikings opened the game with an 8-3 spurt, but West Bladen battled back to knot the game at 9-9 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Akira Grimes canned a three-pointer to help West Bladen stay with West Columbus and the two teams entered the fourth frame still tied at 15-15.

But over the next 8 minutes, the lady Knights outscored the hosts by a 14-2 margin with a balanced attack and a stiff defense, and coasted to the 12-point win.

Grimes led West Bladen with nine points, while Laikyn Pait contributed seven and Kaylee Stevens added six.

The Lady Knights will take to the road again on Wednesday for a non-conference game at Fairmont.

Knights win, 68-62

The victory moves West Bladen to 2-0.

The Vikings nipped West Bladen by a 16-15 margin in the second quarter to build a slim 31-28 lead at intermission — thanks in part to missed opportunities at the free throw line for the Knights.

With Sayaun Dent putting nine points on the scoreboard, the Knights outpaced West Columbus by a 23-18 margin to seal the win.
