PINEHURST — Another stiff test produced a stellar outing for 14-year-old Cade Hancock of Elizabethtown at Pinehurst Country Club over the weekend.
“This was a real test of golf, seeing as how many qualifying events for the PGA Tour are played on this course,” said Courtney Brisson, Hancock’s coach.
Hancock was one of 27 high-school golfers playing in the two-day tournament sponsored by Yadkin Bank and directed by The Tarheel Golf Foundation.
Playing in the first group off on Saturday, Hancock was competing in the freshman/sophomore division. The weather was perfect for golf throughout the day and Hancock, who was paired with two high-school juniors, took advantage. After carding a par on the first hole, a long par 5, Hancock scrambled through a rough time with his irons to finish the day with a 77 — good for second place in his division.
On Sunday, the degree of difficulty was turned up a few notches, as the weather turned rainy and cold.
Hancock fought off the conditions and posted an 85 for a two-day total of 162 — good for fourth place in his division and 13th place overall.
