Lady Knights drop a heart-breaker, 2-1

WHITEVILLE — The Lady Knights and Lady Wolfpack put together an early season classic on the diamond Friday and couldn’t decide the non-conference game until extra innings.

Each team scored a run in the first frame, but didn’t put together a run over the next six innings. But Whiteville used a couple of hits, a walk and an error to bring the winning run home in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 2-1 win.

The loss drops West Bladen to 1-1 this season.

The Lady Knights opened the game with a run in the top of the first when Alanna Ludlum reached on a dropped third strike. Abby Dawson came on as a courtesy runner and raced all the way home on an RBI single by Laikyn Pait.

But the Lady Wolfpack answered with a run in the home half of the first inning to knot the game at 1-1.

Over the next six innings, it was a pitchers’ duel.

The Lady Wolfpack, however, finally broke through in the eight frame to earn the win.

In the circle for West Bladen, Sophia Singletary took the tough loss despite only giving up one first-inning hit and two eighth-inning hits. Neither of the Lady Wolfpack’s runs were earned.

At the plate, Pait led the Lady Eagles by going 3-for-3 with the RBI, while Kassidy Andrerson and Conner Brisson each had a single.

After hosting South Brunswick on Monday in a non-conference game, West Bladen will open Four County Conference play on Friday by hosting Union at 6 p.m.
