ELIZABETHTOWN — Students at Elizabethtown Christian Academy went on a different kind of field trip during the month of April and, on Monday, they told their class, teachers, staff and parents all about their travels.
Actually, the field trip was taken by each of the student’s “flat-self” — after reading the book “Flat Stanley.”
The students drew life-sized versions of themselves and mailed them to friends and/or family in other places — some as far away as Italy and California.
“We thought we’d try something different, and the children seemed to really enjoy it,” said Headmaster Ronald Montgomery. “It turned out to be pretty neat.”
Once all of the students’ “flat-selves” came back to the class, they then put together a display on its travels — where it went, who they visited and how they got there. On Monday, the students gave a presentation on their display and were then treated to a “welcome home” party.
In addition to Italy and California, some of the “flat-selves” traveled to places like Missouri, Illinois, Virginia and throughout North Carolina.
Some of the “flat-selves” rode in police cars, visited Civil War museums, traveled in an airplane and rode the ferry at Southport before returning home.
