LUMBERTON — U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre has floated the idea that he may run for North Carolina governor.

The Lumberton Democrat did so in a statement he released Thursday about the decision by Bev Perdue not to seek a second term.

“Gov. Beverly Perdue has been a dedicated and determined North Carolina public servant,” McIntyre said. “She has always done the best to put North Carolina first. She has been a true champion for our state’s educational system and a fighter for ensuring that our kids get a world-class education. Dee and I wish her family the best.”

He then hinted he might seek the state’s top executive position.

“My heart and passion are in public service and going to work each and every day to build consensus and move North Carolina forward. The ideals and issues that make our state and nation great do not belong to either political party. I love North Carolina; I love serving its people; and I am always open to considering broader opportunities to serve, including the possibility of governor.”

McIntyre has held the District 7 seat in the U.S. House since 1996, but could face a tough re-election. Redistricting, led by the Republican majority in the General Assembly, removed all but a sliver of Robeson County from McIntyre’s district and put it in the 8th District, currently represented by Democrat Larry Kissell. McIntyre had previously indicated he would run again in District 7, even though Lumberton and his home are in District 8.

The list of possible Democrats quickly grew on Thursday. State Rep. Bill Faison is expected to throw his hat in the ring, as is Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton. Former state Treasurer Richard Moore is also reported to be considering a run for the governor’s mansion.

Other names being floated include Erskine Bowles, U.S Rep. Heath Shuler, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and State Sen. Dan Blue.

Pat McCrory, the former mayor of Charlotte, is the presumptive Republican candidate. He lost to Perdue during the 2008 election.
