DUBLIN — The school record for wins on the tennis court by the Lady Knights fell again Tuesday as West Bladen High thrashed West Brunswick by an 8-1 verdict.

The win improved the Lady Knights to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the Waccamaw Conference.

After dropping the No. 1 singles match, the Lady Knights took control with eight straight convincing wins.

In singles, Hannah Dowless took an easy 6-1, 6-0 “W” at No. 2; Erica Tanner whitewashed her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Nicole Nye survived a 6-7 (4), 1-0 match when her opponent retired at No. 4; Josie Ludlum breezed to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5; and Alicia Avellaneda took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 that sealed the match for West Bladen.

In doubles action, the tandem of Storms and Tanner earned an 8-4 win at No. 1; Dowless and Nye teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 2; and the duo of Ludlum and Avellaneda took an 8-1 win at No. 3.

The school record for wins in a season by the Lady Knights going into the season stood at seven.

— After a slow start, the Lady Knights of West Bladen High fought back from a 2-0 deficit in Shallotte on Tuesday, but couldn’t beat back West Brunswick High in a Waccamaw Conference match.

West Bladen lost an 11-25, 18-25, 25-23, 24-26 verdict and fell to 10-4 overall, 5-4 in the conference.

Putting up solid numbers in the match for the Lady Knights was Mallory Davis, who tallied 13 service points, 10 blocks and four kills. Haley Cox and Kaitlyn Sykes each added 12 service points for West Bladen, while Abbey Walters contributed 10 service points and 10 kills.

Courtney Thompson had 11 service points for the lady Knights and added a triple trio — three aces, three blocks and three kills.

— In Southport on Tuesday, East Bladen High fell in straights sets by a 25-20, 25-8 and 25-18 verdict to South Brunswick High in Waccamaw Conference action.

The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 5-11 overall, 2-6 in the conference.

The Lady Cougars, unbeaten in conference play, improved to 11-2 overall and 9-0 in the Waccamaw.

Abbey Norris led East Bladen on the stat sheet with four kills, three aces and two blocks. Miller Heustess added a pair of aces and a kill.

— In Tabor City on Wednesday, the Knights of West Bladen High took host South Columbus High to overtime knotted at 4-4, but surrendered a pair of goals and lost the Waccamaw Conference match by a 6-4 margin.

The loss drops the Knights to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference. South Columbus improves to 3-5-1, 2-4.

South Columbus tallied the first two goals before the 7-minute mark of the first half before Cameron Winebarger scored and, 2 minutes later, Clay Allen knotted the game.

In the second half, the Stallions scored early for a 3-2 edge, but Allen and Winebarger teamed again for a pair of goals to take a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes to play.

South Columbus, however, found the back of the net with 3 minutes left to knot the score.

In the extra time, South Columbus scored once in the first OT and once in the second OT to seal the win.
