Football success puts Eagles on list

CHAPEL HILL — Wachovia Bank, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recently announced the standings for fall sports in the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2008-09 academic year. The East Bladen High School Eagles tied for 15th overall in the 1-A classification with Swain and Williamston, all at 75 points each.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program is in its 30th year.

Hampstead Topsail holds a 60-point advantage over Hendersonville, 202.5-142.5, at the top of the 1-A standings. Topsail won the 1-A men’s soccer state title and had the top-ranked 1-A women’s golf team among its playoff points in four sports. Hendersonville advanced to the state semi-finals in football and placed fourth in both cross-country state events. Raleigh Charter is in third with 137.5 points and the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham is 15 points back in fourth.

Wachovia Cup points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.
