Fall baseball league forming

CLARKTON — Clarkton Dixie Youth will be starting a fall baseball league, and an organizational meeting for the league will be held on Monday, July 30, at the Clarkton DYB complex starting at 7:30 p.m.
Teams from Bladen County, Elizabethtown, Whiteville and Columbus County are welcome. Any coach wishing to enter a team in the league needs to attend the meeting.
Players will be placed in the age division for the 2013 season to be eligible to play. Parents, if your area does not form a team and you want child to play in the fall, let us know. Send us an email with your child’s full name, date of birth, address and phone number — email us at clarktondixieyouth@yahoo.com.
No travel teams, please.

LUMBERTON — A University of North Carolina alumni dinner will be held Thursday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton.
The guest speaker will be Jones Angell, the “Voice of the Tar Heels.”

Soccer registration is under way

ELIZABETHTOWN — Soccer registration through the Bladen County Parks & Recreation Department is now under way.

— Tot soccer registration will continue through Aug. 31. Tot soccer is for boys and girls ages 3 to 4 years-old. The registration fee is $25.

— Youth soccer registration will also continue through August 31. Youth soccer will be for ages 5 to 7 years old, 8 to 10 years old, and 11 to 14 years old. Registration fee is $30.

Free health fair scheduled

LUMBERTON — Touchdown for Health, a free health fair hosted in conjunction with the Vonta Leach Foundation and Southeastern Regional Medical Center, will be held Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Lifestyle Center for Fitness and Rehabilitation in Lumberton.

Rowland native and Baltimore Ravens Fullback Vonta Leach will sign autographs at the event from noon to 1 p.m.

Free sports physicals will be offered to the first 75 students who participate. A $10 fee will be charged for all other physicals with the proceeds benefiting the Robeson County High School Athletic Association. A parent or legal guardian must be present in order for students to receive a sports physical.

Individuals 18 and over can participate in free health screenings which include checks for total cholesterol and HDL; blood sugar; height, weight and body mass index; blood pressure; and peripheral vascular disease or PVD.

Children of all ages can enjoy bounces houses, a bungee run and healthy snacks during the event.

Cheerleading tryouts

DUBLIN — West Bladen High’s junior varisty cheerleading tryouts will be held July 25 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the school.

There will be a two-day preactice for tryouts on July 23-24 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the school.

Participants must have a current physical to take part.

Jamboree set for Aug. 10

ELIZABETHTOWN — The annual Bladen County Football Jamboree will be held at East Bladen High on Aug. 10 and carry a new name: Buddy Burney Memorial Jamboree, A Four County Electric Event.

Burney, who passed away a little more than three years ago, spent more than 30 years as the sports editor at the Bladen Journal and was heavily involved at the local and state level with Dixie Youth Baseball.

The Jamboree will open at 7 p.m. with the host Eagles facing East Columbus High at one end of the field, and West Bladen High facing West Columbus High at the other end for a 55-minute scrimmage. After a 10-minute break, East Columbus and West Columbus will swap opponents for another 55-minute scrimmage with the Bladen teams.

Fore the Lord tournament

WHITE LAKE — The 2012 Fore The Lord Golf Tournament will be held at Carolina Sands Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 6, sponsored by the Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

The shotgun start begins at noon.

All proceeds will benefit the Methodist Home for Children. Cost is $50 per person and $100 for a hole sponsorship.
