CERRO GORDO — Morgan Sweeney fired in eight service winners, seven of which were aces, and the Lady Knights of West Bladen swept West Columbus in a non-conference volleyball match on Monday by the scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-10.
In addition to Sweeney, the trio of Kathryn Schultz, Krisna Ransom and Breanna Jackson combined for 25 service points and 10 aces against the Lady Vikings. Jackson accounted for six aces, while Ransom added nine kills to lead West Bladen.
Other Lady Knights who contributed to the win included Kassidy Anderson, who had six service winners, three aces and a pair of kills; and Lorna Smith, who had three aces.
— In Elizabethtown on Monday, the Lady Eagles swept the visiting Lady Bulldogs of St. Pauls by the scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-20.
Abby Norris and Hannah DeVane combined for 22 service winners, including 10 aces, en route to the win. Norris recorded 12 service points and added eight aces and four kills; DeVane had 10 service winners, a pair of aces and two kills.
East Bladen also got seven service winners, three aces and three kills from Lacey Suggs.
— West Bladen again got victories from its lower seeds on Monday and handed West Columbus a 6-3 non-conference loss in Cerro Gordo.
Alanna Ludlum picked up an 8-4 win at No. 3 singles; Amber Long was a a whitewash 8-0 winner at No. 4; Tatianna Sturgis also shut out her opponent at No. 5 by an 8-0 verdict; and Sydney Jackson remained undefeated on the season with another 8-0 win for the Lady Knights.
In doubles action, Madison and Staton teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 2; Sturgis and Jackson also blanked their opponents, 8-0 at No. 3.
— In Lumberton on Monday, the Pirates tallied the game-winner with two ticks left on the clock to hand visiting East Bladen a heart-breaking 1-0 non-conference loss.
The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles, who had played to a tie in both their previous matches.
Matt Massengill was credited with three saves in the nets for East Bladen.
— The Knights of West Bladen also gave up a goal with 2 seconds left in the match and fell to West Columbus, 3-2, in Cerro Gordo on Monday.
The Vikings tallied two early goals and had a 2-0 edge at halftime, but the Knights managed to knot the game on second-half goals from Victor Jacome and Colby McLean.
