DUBLIN — The West Bladen girls tennis team opened the season on Monday with a 6-3 non-conference win over visiting West Columbus.
Though the Lady Vikings took victories at the higher seeds, the Lady Knights put the match away with wins at the lower seeds.
In singles, Alanna Ludlum too a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3; Amber Long won by a 6-1, 6-0 verdict at No. 4; Tatianna Sturgis was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 5; and Sydney Jackson made her debut at No. 6 with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing.
In doubles action, Madison Staton teamed with Ludlum for an 8-0 win at No. 2, and the duo of Sturgis and Jackson took an 8-0 win at No. 3.
“I thought the girls played well for their first game,” said West Bladen coach Jeff Atkinson. “Going in, I knew the top two girls from West Columbus were pretty strong players. They both played and placed second in the regionals last year in doubles, and played at the state level.
“We still have to improve on our serves and reduce our unforced errors,” he added. “We’re still not where I know we have the potential to be, but we are working to get there.”
— In Dublin on Monday, Breanna Jackson and Laikyn Pait combined for 47 service points and nine aces to pace the Lady Knights to a 25-11, 25-7 and 25-11 season-opening win over West Columbus in non-conference action.
Jackson recorded 24 service winners and six aces, while Pait added 23 service winners and three aces.
Kathryn Schultz added 13 service points, while Krisna Ranson had five kills and three blocks for the Lady Knights.
— In Dublin on Monday, Colby McLean and Christian Diego each scored a pair of goals to lead West Bladen past West Columbus in the season-opener, 6-0.
The Knights opened a 4-0 halftime lead on two goals by McLean and single goals from Diego and Seth Britt. Michael Pastore and Diego added goals in the second half to seal the win.
Britt and Victor Jacombe each had a pair of assists for West Bladen.
