DUBLIN — The West Bladen girls tennis team opened the season on Monday with a 6-3 non-conference win over visiting West Columbus.

Though the Lady Vikings took victories at the higher seeds, the Lady Knights put the match away with wins at the lower seeds.

In singles, Alanna Ludlum too a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3; Amber Long won by a 6-1, 6-0 verdict at No. 4; Tatianna Sturgis was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 5; and Sydney Jackson made her debut at No. 6 with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing.

In doubles action, Madison Staton teamed with Ludlum for an 8-0 win at No. 2, and the duo of Sturgis and Jackson took an 8-0 win at No. 3.

“I thought the girls played well for their first game,” said West Bladen coach Jeff Atkinson. “Going in, I knew the top two girls from West Columbus were pretty strong players. They both played and placed second in the regionals last year in doubles, and played at the state level.

“We still have to improve on our serves and reduce our unforced errors,” he added. “We’re still not where I know we have the potential to be, but we are working to get there.”
