HAMPSTEAD — An impromptu practice round on Sunday helped Cade Hancock earn a weather-shortened win on the Coastal Junior Golf Tour on Monday at Old Pointe Golf & Country Club.
According to his father Jim, Cade had first claimed on Sunday that it was too hot to play golf — which resulted in Jim thinking he had ample time to do some afternoon relaxing.
“I woke from a nap and found Cade dressed and ready to go,” Jim said. “He told me, ‘Let’s go Dad, Land O Lakes.’”
And off they went.
Thirteen-year-old Cade birdied the first hole, a par 5, then added another birdie on the third hole — and three more birdies at Nos. 13, 16 and 17. When the round came to a close, Cade had carded five birdies, 10 pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot his first-ever under-par round with a 71.
That practice round proved beneficial, as Cade traveled to Hampstead on Monday to compete on the Coastal Junior Golf Tour, where he carded a one-over-par 37 on the front nine. He followed that up with two pars, a bogey and a birdie through the first four holes of the back nine before the one-day tournament was called because of poor weather.
That put Cade at one over par for the tournament and gave him a five-stroke victory.
