DUBLIN — Pender County took advantage of the Lady Knights’ lone error of the game, using it to score an unearned run and take a 1-0 win Friday in a Four County Conference matchup.

West Bladen pitcher Nicole Wyatt was all but untouchable through the first five frames, giving up just a single, a walk and two balls hit out of the infield. But in the top of the sixth, the Lady Patriots nicked Wyatt for for a one-out single — and when the runner stole second, the ensuing throw sailed into center field and allowed the runner to come all the way around to score.

West Bladen, meanwhile, was finding it difficult to string hits together.

The Lady Knights threatened in the fourth when Laikyn Pait led off with an infield single and, after an out, Wyatt singled and Josie Ludlum’s sacrifice turned into an error and filled the bags. But two pop-ups to the catcher ended the uprising.

West Bladen threatened again in the fifth when Morgan Sweeney and Taylor Stephens reached on one-out singles and a fielder’s choice by Pait moved them to second and third. But the threat ended there with a strikeout.

In the seventh, Sweeney drew a one-out walk and Stephens reached on a bunt single. A fly ball advanced the runners, but the game ended on a pop-up.

“We had our opportunities,” said West Bladen coach Pam Stephens. “I couldn’t have set it up any better than we had it those two innings (fifth and seventh).”

Wyatt went the distance in the circle, giving up the unearned run on four hits, one walk and nine strikeouts. She also led West Bladen at the plate, going 2-for-3. Stephens was 2-for-4.
