Eagles upend Midway for fourth staight
ELIZABETHTOWN — East Bladen continued its assault on the Four County Conference standings on Friday, winning its fourth straight game with a 60-43 victory over conference leader Midway.
The win improved the Eagles to 9-7 overall and evened its conference mark at 4-4.
East Bladen opened the game with a stout defense and aggressive offense. The Raiders could manage just a pair of free throws in the first quarter, while the Eagles flew out to a 12-2 lead behind three-pointers from Farrell Murchison and Alex Stephens. Jaquan Jones added four points in the opening-period spurt.
East Bladen got another three-pointer from Murchison to start the second stanza, extending the lead to 15-2, but the Raiders went on a 6-0 spurt before Murchison drained another three-pointer to put East Bladen on top by an 18-8 margin.
After Midway pulled to within 18-13, the Eagles got a three-pointer from Davonta Smith before the Raiders went on a 6-1 spurt and closed the gap to 22-19. But East Bladen closed out the first half with a 7-2 run behind baskets from Jones, Marshall Allen and Dayvon Powell to take a 29-21 lead into intermission.
The third quarter proved to be a back and forth low-scoring affair but, with just over 30 seconds left in the period and the Eagles holding a four-point lead, East Bladen got baskets from Monterro Graham and Jones to take a 39-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
East Bladen used the final 8 minutes to put the final nail in Midway’s coffin, outscoring the Raiders by a 21-12 margin to claim the win. Midway’s 12 points down the stretch included a 7- spurt that closed the gap to 55-41, but the Eagles finished the game on a 5-2 run.
Jones posted a double-double for East Bladen, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Murchison contributed 11 points for the Eagles, while Eian Hines had eight rebounds and seven points. Stephens added nine rebounds and seven points.
