Knights have goals within reach Friday

DUBLIN — The Knights have several goals on their list that can be crossed off when they host the Titans from Heidi Trask on Friday.
No. 1 on the list is that it’s a homecoming game for West Bladen, and the Knights haven’t won a homecoming game in a number of years.
No. 2 on the list is that West Bladen can become playoff eligible for the first time in a number of seasons with a win.
And finally, No. 3 on the list is stopping the Titans’ running back Dalen Faison, who is the key to Trask’s entire offensive scheme.
“There’s a lot riding on this game, and the kids all know it,” said West Bladen coach Russell Dove. “We’ve gotten into their heads all week about winning a homecoming game, getting playoff eligible and what it will take to accomplish it.”
The Titans currently dwell in the cellar of the Four County Conference at 0-2 and 0-6 overall. They have scored just 73 points and given up a conference-worst 259 points. But Dove isn’t taking Trask lightly.
“They had some players suspended earlier that I’ve heard are back now,” he said. “So this could be a different team we see. Either way, we have to find a way to stop (Faison).”
The Titans operate the offense out of a veer/option, and Dove said they “run it very well” with Faison at the controls. He was the Titans’ workhorse last week, rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries in a near upset of Union.
“He’s really good,” Dove added, “and is definitely the key to the whole thing.”
On defense, Trask lines up primarily in a 53 and are led by Faison at linebacker and lineman Zach Liotard.
“It’s very similar to what we do and what we’ve seen,” Dove said.
Along with the three main goals on the list this week for the Knights are other weekly goals.
“We didn’t tackle or block real well (against Wallace-Rose Hill) last week, so that has to get better,” Dove said. “We also have to do a better job with the fundamentals — but we’ve had a good week of practice and the kids are working hard.”
