ELIZABETHTOWN — The Eagles of East Bladen will fly off to Monroe on Friday in an effort to get off the schnide after opening the season with two tough losses for the second straight year.

East Bladen will make the three-hour trip to face a 1-2 Sun Valley High team with a high-powered offense and stiff defense.

“We’re going to have our hands full,” said East Bladen coach Robby Priest. “This isn’t a pushover game for us. They have speed, size and athleticism. And they have a lot of depth.”

The Spartans run a spread offense, often out of the shotgun, but will also line up in the Wing T. They are led by quarterback Drew Swoope, who Priest says is “real mobile and athletic with a good arm.” Behind Swoope is N.C. State and UNC recruit Albert Funderburk at running back, who Priest says is “really fast and can also hurt you on special teams.”

On defense, Sun Valley lines up in a basic 40 with numerous variations, and Priest said “they like to just fly around.”

After an open week last Friday, Priest said the Eagles have gone back to basics and tried to simplify things.

“We’ve got to get back into a good rhythm and get everyone on the same page,” he said.

His keys to winning this week are the usual — eliminate stupid penalties, stop turning the ball over and play better defense.
