CARY — The Lady Knights’ doubles team of Conner Brisson and Savannah Lee put up a dogged battle Friday at the Cary Tennis Park, but dropped a heart-breaking straight-sets match to bring their season to a close.
It was the opening round of the state’s Class 2-A doubles championship, where the West Bladen duo went up against the Greene Central High duo of Taylor Williams and Hinson Brit — and the two tandem’s quickly put together a playoff classic that extended beyond regular play.
Williams and Hinson eeked out a 7-6 win in the first game, then followed it up with another close one, nipping Brisson and Lee by a 7-5 margin.
“(It was a) hard-fought match, but we are proud to have made it this far,” said West Bladen coach Mary White. “They were evenly matched, but we had too many unforced errors. They gave it everything they had but just couldn’t pull away with a lead.”
With the season concluded, Brisson and Lee — both juniors — finished with a record of 9-7 overall as a doubles team. In singles, Brisson was 13-4 between No. 1 and No. 2; and Lee was 13-3 between No. 2 and No. 3.
“They are already looking forward to next year,” White said.
