— Jan. 3, 1968: Elizabethtown Mayor Cecil Edge and Jaycees Project Chairman Charles Taylor turn the first spades of dirt during a groundbreaking for the planned community and recreation building.
— Jan. 3, 1979: Merrold H. McCall, a native of Elizabethtown and graduate of Elizabethtown High School, is named manager of the A&P store in Elizabethtown.
— Jan. 4, 1988: Theodore L. Gantlin is the first baby born at Bladen County Hospital for the new year. The 6-pound, 15-ounce boy is the son of Sherry Gantlin of Clarkton. He was born at 8:21 a.m. on Jan. 1.
— Jan. 2, 2004: Marion Morrisey retires after 23 years as financial officer for the town of Elizabethtown.
— Jan. 2, 2009: Clarkton gears up to host “Buddy Burney Day” at the Clarkton Dixie Youth Baseball Complex to honor the longtime DYB organizer and coach, as well as local, district and national director. Burney, who served 30-plus years as sports editor of the Bladen Journal, was recently diagnosed with advanced liver and pancreatic cancer.
