— Sept. 13, 1967: Clarkton prepares to hold “Guy Owen Day” to honor the local author who wrote “The Flim-Flam man,” which was made into a movie of the same name by 20th Century Fox and starred George C. Scott and Sue Lyon.
— Sept. 14, 1978: A petition calling for a referendum on the legalization of beer and wine sales in Bladenboro falls short when the effort gathered just 121 of the 141 signatures required.
— Sept. 14, 1987: Th A&P food store on South Poplar Street in Elizabethtown will host the Bladen County Food Festival to benefit the American Heart Association.
— Sept. 12, 2003: Willa D. Williams, a vocational business teacher at East Bladen High School, is selected Bladen County’s Teacher of the Year for 2003-04.
— Sept. 12, 2008: Bladen County Schools Supt. Ken Dinkins requests that the Board of Education not extend his contract beyond June 2009, citing a divided board as his main concern.
