ELIZABETHTOWN — Deputies with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office received good news recently when the Bureau of Justice Assistance notified Sheriff Prentis Benston that his department had been awarded a $5,109.82 grant for the purchase of armored vests.

The grant application, which was authored by Capt. Jeff Singletary, is made available through the Bulletproof Vest Partnership for fiscal year 2014-15.

“Bulletproof vests are a high priority item that each deputy has,” said Chief Deputy Rodney Hester, “and this grant will keep those bulletproof vests up to the standards that are set by the manufacturer.”

Hester said the Sheriff’s Office utilizes bulletproof vests on a five-year cycle and replaces any that have cycled out.

“It varies how many vests we purchase each year,” he said. “We are replacing eight vests this budget year (and) next year we are looking at having to replace 13 vests due to the five-year cycle.”

According to Hester, bulletproof vests cost about $525 each.
