Taxi service available in Bladen County

ELIZABETHTOWN — Bladen County has a new taxi service, thanks to Richard “Sling” Shaw and his father Mike Shaw.
Big Daddy’s Taxi Service has been operating for about three weeks, according to Shaw.
It has been nearly 20 years since Bladen County saw a taxi service, according to Shaw. He said he and his father saw a need that was not being filled and decided to start providing the county with such a service.
Shaw said that the taxi service had to go through an approval process which culminated with the Elizabethtown Town Council’s approval at last month’s board meeting.
“We just felt we needed to provide a service that hasn’t been available,” said Shaw.
He added the calls for service have been increasing from week to week as the word has gotten out. Shaw added that some of the calls for service they have received have been rather unusual.
“We had a woman that hit a deer and needed to get back to Lumberton,” said Shaw.
He added there had been several calls that came from stranded motorists with mechanical failure of their cars.
“It has been a learning process for all of us,” said Shaw of the new endeavor.
Shaw said it just seemed the timing was right with the upcoming festival season, Halloween parties and Christmas parties as well as the hospital foundation gala, and other events in the county.
“We offer a safe alternative to get people back and forth,” said Shaw.
Currently, the taxi service is housed at Home and Industrial and has three drivers, said Shaw. Those who need a ride can call 910-874-3341.
