ELIZABETHTOWN — A request for investigation from the Bladen County Department of Social Services resulted in the arrest of a local man on charges that he was selling food stamp cards.

According to Elizabethtown Police Chief Bobby Kinlaw, DSS notified his office on Aug. 29 and the investigation commenced. Shortly after, a warrant was issued for the suspect.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect … had sold an EBT card,” Kinlaw said.

Elizabethtown officers arrested Richard Ziglar, 51, of Elizabethtown on Sept. 27. He has been charged with selling an electronic food and nutrition benefit card.

“This agency will investigate any reports of illegal use of government assistance and will work with DSS and the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute any violators,” Kinlaw said. “Hardworking, tax-paying citizens deserve to know that government assistance funds are used for their intended purpose, and abuse will not be tolerated.”

Ziglar remains in the Bladen County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond.

Kinlaw said the investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.
