ELIZABETHTOWN — The Minuteman convenience store on South Poplar Street in Elizabethtown was the target of an armed robbery on Tuesday, and police are still searching for the suspect.
According to Elizabethtown Police Chief Bobby Kinlaw, the incident took place at about 10:45 p.m. Police were notified that a man walked into the store and demanded money.
“The subject indicated that he had a gun, but none was displayed,” Kinlaw said. “After the subject grabbed the money from the register, he fled on foot across South Poplar Street.”
Kinlaw added that a Bladen County Sheriff’s deputy was in the area and saw a vehicle leave the parking lot about a block away from the store. The car did not have its headlights on and was leaving the area at a high rate of speed.
“The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle (and) chased the vehicle to Gill Street and Kemp Street about one-half mile away,” Kinlaw said. “The … vehicle stopped and the driver fled on foot.”
The vehicle was seized and officers are continuing to investigate the robbery with a number of leads.
Kinlaw said the suspect is described as being a black male standing between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5-11 tall. He was last seen wearing a white tank top and blue denim shorts.
