He worked in child protective services at the Bladen County Department of Social Services for a short period after graduating but soon changed career paths and became a financial advisor at CLC Financial, where he has worked for 10 years. In addition to financial counseling, he manages a family farm.

Dr. Gemma came to Bladen County from Texas in 2001. A West Virginia native, he earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University. He completed medical school at Medical College of Virginia and in 1962 was commissioned as a surgeon in the U.S. Army.

During his 22-year Army career, he served in a number of locations, including two tours of duty in Germany and one in Korea, before retiring in 1984. After retirement, he went into private practice as a general surgeon in Killeen, Texas. Eighteen years later he moved to Bladen County and worked at Bladen County Hospital for four years before retiring in 2006.
