ELLERBE — A Sunday afternoon traffic accident south of Ellerbe that left two Laurinburg residents hospitalized has loved ones looking for a third member of the traveling party — a pet toy poodle named Ellie.
Margaret Williams and her sister, Frances Benton were traveling south on Highway 220 on Sunday, on their way home from visiting family in Greensboro when for unknown reasons, Williams lost control over the white Chevy Venture passenger van. As Williams’ niece Sandra Williams explained it Williams attempted to correct the error, but overcorrected, and the vehicle left the roadway and flipped at least three times.
“My mother-in-law says she didn’t really know what happened,” Sandra Williams said.
Both Benton and Margaret Williams were airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, where they both remain under the care of doctors. During the accident, Benton was ejected from the vehicle, but Williams was pinned in and suffered multiple injuries.
“She’s getting better, but she’s all beat up,” Sandra Williams said. “It’s just going to break her heart if we can’t find the dog.”
Ellie is tan, or apricot, and is about 10 years old. She weights approximately 10 pounds. Williams said the dog actually belonged to her father-in-law, who is deceased but “he lives on through the little dog.”
“That’s her only companionship now,” Williams said.
There is another reason to find Ellie quickly — at her advanced age, she requires a special diet and medication.
Williams said only one person on the accident scene recalls a dog in the area. Flyers have been posted, and the family has established a $600 reward for her return. Volunteers have helped searched for the animal and all veterinarian offices and shelters within 100 miles have been alerted, Williams said.
The family even called the wrecker company that took away the damaged vehicle from the accident scene — just in case Ellie had somehow been trapped inside. But the dog wasn’t located there, either.
“Everything that we could think of, we’ve been trying to do,” she said.
Sightings of Ellie can be reported to Williams at 910-276-8797.
