ELIZABETHTOWN — A special celebration was held at Elizabethtown Nursing Home on Thursday to mark the 111th birthday of Arrelia High, a resident at the facility.
High was born on July 2, 1903, in Bladen County to Jasper S. McMillian and Polly McDowell.
Years later, after her parents passed away, married Billy High, who hailed from the Greater New York City area and the couple took up residence there for many years. When her husband passed away in 1965, Arrelia High returned to Bladen County, where she has remained for the past 49 years.
Her birthday celebration on Thursday was marked with family and friends in attendance.
She was also presented with a proclamation from Bladen County giving special recognition and appreciation for her years of service toward making her community a better place.
