TAR HEEL — Thirty-six students from Tar Heel Middle School competed in the Regional Science Olympiad competition in Fayetteville against 16 other schools.

The school’s varsity team came in seventh place overall and the school’s junior varsity team came in second place overall and brought home a trophy.

Several students competed on individual teams and brought home 12 topifive finishes.

Placing for the varsity team were:

— Fifth place in the Crave the Wave event – Atzel Salvador and Daniel Zalava

— Third place in the Wind Power event – Gerado Cristibol

— Second place in the Food Science event – Roxana Campos and Claudia Reyes

— Second place in the Fossils event – Tristin Sadler and Samaria Grant

— First place in the Green Generation event and moving on the State competition – Edgardo Lara and Daniel Zalava

Placing for the junior varsity team were:

— Second place in the Bridge Building event – Mayra Vazquez and Serenity Flakes

— Second place in the Elastic Glider event – Caroline Brisson and Shelby Tatum

— Second place in the Food Science event – Ashanti Rozier and Haley Lewis

— Second place in the Invasive Species event – Madison Taylor and Taylor Caulder

— Second place in the Reach for the Stars event – Mayra Vazquez and Serenity Flakes

— First place in the Dynamic Planet event – Shelby Tatum and Ashanti Rozier

— First place in the Scrambler event – Olivia Allen and Haleigh Fields

Students competing as part of the school team were: Alexis Ray, Bridgette Munoz Elizalde and Cheyenne Lewis.
