On Thursday, Jan. 21, seven Harrells Christian Academy students participated in the annual Poetry Out Loud competition, a national recitation competition in which thousands of high-school students across the country compete for a $20,000 award. Those who competed for Harrells were (front row, from left) Lucas Thornton (second place, Teachey), Caroline Jones (first place, Kenansville), Lydia Thompson (third place, Wallace); (back row, from left) Hunter Hathaway (Kenansville), Thomas Rhodes (Beulaville), Cameron Blue (Wallace), and Taylor Brinson (Kenansville). Students were judged based on their physical presence, voice and articulation, evidence of understanding, accuracy, and overall presentation of the poem. Caroline Jones will represent HCA at the state competition in March, which is held at the Greensboro Public Library. There, she will recite three poems selected from Poetry Out Loud’s website in hopes of qualifying as a finalist and being named North Carolina’s 2016 POL champion.
